Kennard
Design Group, dba KDG Architecture & Planning, has as its
roots a firm established by the late African-American architect, Robert
Kennard, FAIA, in Los Angeles in 1957.
After graduating from the University of Southern California School
of Architecture, Mr. Kennard worked for the firms of Richard Neutra,
Victor Gruen, Robert Alexander and Daniel Mann Johnson Mendenhall before
founding his own firm. In
1976 Kennard Design Group became a California corporation, and today it
has the distinction of being the oldest, continuously operated
African-American-owned architectural firm in the West.
Since Mr. Kennard's death in 1995, his daughter, Gail Kennard, has assumed leadership of the firm along with a capable staff of
veteran architects and other professionals.
The board of directors includes architects licensed in California
and several other states.
Throughout its history, the majority of the firm's
clients have been in Southern California, although we have completed a
significant number of projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and in such
cities as Washington D.C., New York and Atlanta.
The primary focus of our work has been in assisting clients in the
areas of college and universities, K-12 education, health care,
recreation, municipal facilities (civic and community centers, libraries,
police and fire facilities), transportation and planning.
